Dr. Mears’ writing style is elegant, straightforward, and grounded in the pragmatic realities of qualitative researchers. Her “gateway approach” honors and prioritizes participants as narrators of their lived experiences, and analyzes/displays their essential meanings as rich, poetic renderings.
Mears’ work is based on her award-winning dissertation on interviews with parents of Columbine High School’s students. Her sensitive, compassionate, empathic, and ethical nature is woven throughout her writing and recommendations for listening to others’ stories.
This is an outstanding title on methods of interviewing–one of the best available in the academic literature. I highly recommend this work for students and seasoned researchers.
